When the focus is all on us being on the top we will have our eyes on ourselves. We will focus on ourselves because we need to see where we are in relationship to everyone else. We are taught in society to put others first but we turn right around and put ourselves first.
What does the Bible teach on being first? In Matthew it say, “But many who are first will be last; and the last, first (Matt 19:30 NASU). There is a time coming when those who were not all about being first will get to be first. I would rather be first for all eternity and last now, wouldn’t you?
Jesus showed us the proper way to live our lives. He taught, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again”. (Luke 6: 38 ASV). The more giving we are, the more blessed we are in other ways. When we are giving we are not trying to put ourselves first.
He also taught, “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. "If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. "Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. "Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. (Matt 5:39-42 NASU).
The life of Christ was always about making the other person’s life better. He was not interested in being number one. He wanted the other person to be first. What a change from the way some of us live our lives today.
