Jesus did not mince words. He claimed to be the way to life. He either was who he said he was or he was not. I chose to believe him a long time ago and he changed my life. If you do not believe you cannot receive. Believing is a prerequisite to understanding.
Jesus spoke in parables so those that were not willing to trust him by faith, would not understand him. “
And He said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that
'Seeing they may not see,
And hearing they may not understand.' (Luke 8:10 NKJV).
Many people claim to know Christ but do not. We cannot say who those are that are not born of him. Only God knows the answer to who his children are. In The book of John it also says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27 ASV).
So how does one get born spiritually? We must believe Jesus is who he said he was. If we really believe Jesus is the Christ, then we will act accordingly. When we act we put our faith and trust in him. That means we give him our lives. Our lives can no longer be our own. You cannot give him your life and keep it too. You cannot have your cake and eat it. You are either on board with Jesus or you are not.
