Jesus dealt with the same problem when he would teach people. There was something that was very unique about him, however. He would never force his beliefs on people. One of his favorite phrases was, “If any man has ears to hear, let him hear” (Mark 4: 23 NASU). Jesus would basically be saying to people that if they were open minded then they could understand the things that he had to tell them. When they had preconceived ideas he would not be able to help them.
We all have beliefs that we have formed over the course of time. These beliefs become our reality. They become what we know. When we know something we close our minds to all the other things that may be true. There cannot be new learning in a closed mind. If we want to learn we need to open ourselves up to new possibilities.
When we only seek information that supports our convictions we put up a blocking barrier that will not allow other information into our minds. That is one of the reasons some people struggle so much with being open minded. They are afraid they will be lead into believing something that is not true.
No one wants to be led astray. So how do we make sure what we believe is true?
The Bible says “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock and it will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9 NASU).
I find it interesting that this passage says we are to knock and it will be opened to us. What will be opened to us? The truth about life! That truth is found through an opening. That opening is our way to the truth. But truth also needs an opening to get to back to us. That opening back to us is made possible through an open mind. We must open our minds to the truth before we will ever be able to see it.
