Many times in the game of life these same things happen but we don’t recognize them for what they are. For example; let’s say you’re dating someone and you have been for a long time. That relationship may go bad. In order to try to make up for the problem we often jump into another relationship. We are on the rebound.
We don’t like feeling bad about what has recently happened in our lives. When something bad happens in our lives we try to make up for the problem immediately. We want to feel good about ourselves. In order to feel good about ourselves, we try to do something to make ourselves feel better. What we do to make ourselves feel better many times just creates another problem.
Consider a gambler for instance. They bet on some event and lose money. They feel terrible for losing the money. They wish they had not lost the money that they did. They do not wait for cooler heads to prevail, instead they forge ahead finding something else to bet on. When they do this they are compounding the problem by losing yet more money.
Here is the definition of insanity- doing something over and over again, that doesn’t work, and expecting different results. There comes a time when we need to do something different. We can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results. The problem is we are not patient. The reason we are not patient is because we want to feel good about ourselves immediately and receive instant gratification following the last mistake that we made. Our focus, even though it is subconscious, is to get rid of the feelings that make us feel bad.
