What are we after in life? What makes us seek out being first? Is the glory of being number one worth the cost of being number one? The Bible says,
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life” (Mark 8:36-38 ESV)?
You can be number one but if you are not born again you have accomplished nothing that will last. Some of us grow up searching for approval. When we are number one at something we gain people’s approval. With their approval comes praise. The praise is what we are really seeking. The praise becomes what we chase after. Along with the praise we receive comes pride. Pride will take over and dominate your life.
Suddenly all that matters is being the best at what we do at any cost. Do you see the slippery slide we are on here? The very thing we sought became the very thing that ruined our life.
We need to focus on how to help others become number one. That is where the real fulfillment is. When we put others first we become first in another way. We take on a role in someone else’s life that becomes significant. Not very many people have had someone put them first or help them become number one. If you are interested in a person enough to help them be number one then you will also be interested enough to help them keep from pride and all the pitfalls that go with being number one.
Becoming number one is not all it is cracked up to be. When others are first that means you will not be. Can you live without being first? It is a step that everyone must take on the road to maturity.
